[SIMTOS Monthly] Visit Online Matchmaking4U and Enjoy!

Visit Online Matchmaking4U and Enjoy!
-Renewal Matchmaking4U-

Matching program that open on 1st Feb. 2016 is very popular to not only exhibitors but also visitors. About 80% of exhibitors and more 2000 visitors completed registration for marketing information such as company name, e-mail, phone, interesting products, main customers and etc to participate in Matchmaking4U.

SIMTOS 2016 Matchmaking4U completed 1600 matching that is much more 1085 in SIMTOS 2014. 500 of them confirm the meeting in SIMTOS 2016. What is competitiveness of Matchmaking4U? SIMTOS official secretariat said four differentiation.

First differentiation is effort to improve matching rate. Secretariat researches marketing information such as industry, interesting products, website, main customers and etc to exhibitors and visitors. The information is needed when matching.

Second differentiation is to boost quality of meeting. They improve quality of meeting by dividing interesting products(handling products) from two steps to three steps. Visitors could meet exhibitors who are proper for them.

It’s possible to arrange the meeting with companies who want to meet anytime because SIMTOS secretariat would keep running Matchmaking program(b2b.simtos.org) after SIMTOS 2016 to develop oversea market and build relationship between exhibitors and visitors. That’s third differentiation.

Forth differentiation is consideration for visitors. SIMTOS would provide participants in Matchmaking4U with services like the meal and transportation fee. Also oversea visitors who are invited from exhibitors could be offered expense in case of more 3 times matchmaking.

SIMTOS plans to start scheduling to success Matchmaking4U in March. Also they would build timetable for that participants could manage meeting and confirm meeting time.

[Amazing Korea] Innovation in Manufacturing 3.0 Strategy Needs Better Focus with Clearer Direction

Facilitated by a broad economic policy vision informed by the Manufacturing Industry Innovation 3.0 strategy, the concept of a smart factory in Korea has a collective meaning embracing automatization, data exchange and enhanced manufacturing technologies. The Manufacturing Industry Innovation 3.0 strategy is a component of the Creative Economy Industry Engine project, a flagship economic policy of the Park Geun-hye administration that aims to tackle many challenges surrounding the Korean manufacturing industry. It generally refers to the computerization of manufacturing. Broad in focus, the strategy in general and smart factories in particular tend to miss out on the technological challenges faced by Korean manufacturing companies. In order to effectively address the technological and economic issues surrounding the manufacturing industry in Korea, the policy needs a more technologically and economically focused approach.

Officially launched in June 2014, the Manufacturing Industry Innovation 3.0 strategy is part of the Park Geun-hye administration’s flagship policy of the Creative Economy that aims to introduce innovation to the manufacturing process, including expanding the use of smart factories and developing core technologies related to the Internet of Things (IoT), 3-D printing and Big Data. Big Data refers to data processing, data collecting and data sharing that can be used for data analysis and prediction.

The policy also aims at dealing with many associated economic and social challenges surrounding the Korean manufacturing industry.

Externally, Korea’s major manufacturing sectors of shipbuilding, automotive, electronics, chemicals and steel have been faced with challenges such as the rise of China as a manufacturing powerhouse and the weakening of the Japanese yen.

Internally, many local Korean manufacturing companies have suffered from low productivity and efficiency.

For such reasons, according to a recent survey released by British financial information provider Markit, the purchase of manufacturing index (PMI) of the Korean manufacturing industry ranks 24 out of the 28 countries surveyed, posting PMI scores of 47.6.

In fact, the growth rate of the manufacturing sector during Q2 2015 was reduced to 0.4 percent, and the size of exports has decreased by 14.8 percent compared to the same period last year, recording US$3.933 million in value. This marks the lowest point after the global financial crisis of August 2008. Products are stacked on the shelves with the in-stock rate standing at 129.2 percent, the highest in the 2000s.

Facing these challenges, the government introduced the Manufacturing Industry Innovation 3.0 strategy that has a broad reach. The strategy largely consists of three sub-strategies that include the creation of new manufacturing featuring industrial convergence, enhancement of the major segments, and advancement of industrial infrastructure for innovation. The policy also aims to raise 1 trillion won (US$972 million) and set up 10,000 smart factories by 2020 to facilitate convergence between software and hardware technologies.

At the same time, the government plans to foster the growth of those segments combining manufacturing with information technology, examples of which include the incorporation of information technology into the energy management and industrial safety sectors. Also, the core material and component development, engineering, design and software segments receive concentrated policy support.

Given the discrepancy in wealth and technological development between large companies and their secondary and tertiary subcontractors, the Manufacturing Industry Innovation 3.0 strategy puts special emphasis on the growth of the latter to spread wealth, going beyond a mere focus on the enhanced automatization of manufacturing.

The Manufacturing Industry Innovation 3.0 strategy is also a response to the global trend of government-level initiatives to support upgrading and transforming traditional manufacturing.

In the aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2008, governments around the world put a renewed emphasis on manufacturing as a way out of the financial crisis. Most notably, governments in Germany, the U.S., and China launched a policy focusing on transforming and upgrading the manufacturing industry.

As part of the German government’s High-Tech Strategy 2020 Action Plan, the Germen government launched a policy in 2012 named Industry 4.0, which promotes the computerization of manufacturing. The policy specifically focuses on the technological advancement of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), or well-developed systems of collaborating computational software that controls physical entities, the Internet of Things and the Internet of Services.

In September 2013, U.S. President Obama introduced the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP 2.0) to secure U.S. leadership in emerging technologies that will create high-quality manufacturing jobs and enhance the global competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers.

In May this year, China’s State Council unveiled a 10 year plan to upgrade the nation’s manufacturing capacity so that it can catch up with production powerhouses like Germany and the U.S., and fend off competition from other developing countries. The Ministry of Industry and Telecommunication Technology (MIIT) in China took charge of leading the creation of the “Made in China 2025” plan, which put the focus on 10 sectors, including high-end computerized machinery and robotics, aerospace equipment, renewable-energy cars and medicine.

To be clear, smart factories aren’t just the automatization of the manufacturing process. Rather, it refers to a factory where all components are organically connected to each other with an intelligent operating system based on the Internet of Things. The concept of a smart factory basically refers to a future model of factories, which is expected to kick into high gear by 2020, with 30 percent higher productivity than in current factories.

Globally, multinational companies like Siemens and GE enjoy the most technologically sophisticated levels of smart factory systems in the world. Domestically, LS Industrial System (LSIS) and POSCO enjoy the most sophisticated levels of smart factory technologies.

With rapidly advancing ICT, manufacturing environments are changing from old, rigid centralized systems to module-based flexible, decentralized a
nd automatically controlled systems. This change is also looking for ways to build highly efficient and intelligent factories that can connect machines and people through Internet services in convenient and safe workplaces.

As such, developing a highly sophisticated smart factory is possible with CPS. Today, a precursor to a CPS can be found in areas like aerospace, automotive, energy, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, entertainment and consumer appliances.

Although the level of technological development varies across sectors and companies, most SMEs in Korea are in their infant stage and require further technological development to reach higher technological sophistication, especially, the Internet of Things and Big Data. Given the much-needed initial investment for SMEs with low technological competencies and low budgets to be more effective, the current government policy and large corporate efforts to help SMEs need a more focused approach and a specific direction.

[Amazing Korea] S. Korea-China FTA makes Korea a FTA powerhouse

With China added following the ratification of a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA), South Korea would be the only economy in the world to own free trade arrangements with the three major economic blocs- European Union, China and the United States. The list of FTAs would top 50 for Asia`s fourth largest economy.

Korea is also considering joining the multilateral free trade platforms such as the trilateral FTA with China and Japan, China-led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) led by the U.S. and Japan. A bilateral FTA with China places Korea at the hub of global and regional free trade zones.

Through the FTA global network, Korean companies would have competitive edge in international commerce and be are freer than foreign rivals in market access, said Chung In-gyo, an economics professor at Inha University.

A FTA with China would be most beneficial as the world’s second largest economy is Korea’s largest export destination. The country`s exports to China reached $114.5 billion and imports $75.1 billion in the first 10 months of this year, far outpacing trade with the U.S. and Japan.

The FTA would eliminate tariffs for the bulk of the shipment to China that takes up a quarter of total Korean exports. Korea would save $8.7 billion in tariffs in the first year of FTA and $45.8 billion for the next 10 years, according to the estimate by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy.

“Korea would be able to better tap the burgeoning consumer market of China through improved price competitiveness and availability of Korean products through the FTA,” the ministry said.

The flood of cheap Chinese agricultural products could hurt the domestic farming industry, but at the same time serve as the tipping point for the local industry to hone quality and competitiveness and increase revenue base.

Under the deal, Beijing will eliminate tariffs on 91 percent of agricultural imports and 99 percent of fishery imports from Korea. Local industry could eye bigger revenue through exports of quality products to China.

The three economic zones are Korea’s biggest market and manufacturing base. The government should come up with various support measures for small- and mid-sized companies so that they too can make most of the FTA benefits, Chung said.

[Amazing Korea] S.Korea-EU FTA comes into full force

South Korea’s free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) has come into full force starting Sunday after more than four years the trade pact provisionally took effect.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on Friday, the South Korea-EU FTA would go into full effect from Sunday, implementing also non-tariff clauses related to the protection of intellectual property rights and boosting cultural cooperation.

The full implementation of the trade agreement comes four years and five months after the agreement went into effect on July 1, 2011. Tariffs were immediately removed, but some aspects were left unimplemented.

Meanwhile, the full implementation of the trade agreement with the EU is expected to boost cultural exchange between artists, cultural professionals and performers, as well as development in audio-video content and broadcasting ties. It will also improve partnerships in performance arts, publishing and preserving cultural assets.

With regard to intellectual property rights protection, measures call for criminal punishment such as property seizing and imprisonment for those that intentionally forge trademarks, violate copyrights and neighboring copyrights, as well as counterfeit designs. Further details on penalty measures have not been included in the agreement as criminal penalty regulation varies by each EU country, the trade ministry said.

[Amazing Korea] Foreign investment in Korea is on the rise

Foreign investment in Korea is on the rise

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Korea is recovering, data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy showed on Sunday. Through the third quarter of this year, FDI amounted to $13.27 billion, down 10.5 percent compared with a the same period last year, but recovering from a 30 percent drop in the first quarter of this year. The trade ministry said FDI during the third quarter alone, of $4.4 billion, was in line with $4.48 billion during third quarter of last year.

“Given that the rise last year was due to big cross-border merger and acquisition in September, the third quarter’s numbers are quite solid,” the ministry said.

FDI during the first quarter was $3.56 billion and the second quarter was $5.32 billion. FDI on actual arrival basis was $10.8 billion won through the third quarter of this year, up 9.0 percent year-on-year, breaking the psychologically significant $10 billion mark.

“The significant $10 billion mark was broken in the shortest period ever this year, and I think this will signify rising foreign interest in Korea-related investment to other foreign investors who are interested in Korea” said Choo So-ryeong, a trade ministry official. This was also more than the five-year average of $10.3 billion on a reported basis and $6.31 billion on actual arrival basis. The increase was due to a rise in service and construction related investments.

The ministry said it was also seeing the plans for investment reported by foreign investors taking place “smoothly and according to plans.”

Looking into segments, the service industry saw $8.9 billion investments through the third quarter, up 3.5 percent year-on-year, led by Chinese Anbang Insurance Group’s $1 billion buyout of Tong Yang Life Insurance.

Construction sector related investments spiked by 812.2 percent to $1.42 billion.

But manufacturing sector saw a sharp decline in FDI, to $2.95 billion, down 51.3 percent year-on-year, due mostly to last year’s one-off spike in FDI from big M&A deals.

However, FDI in the manufacturing sector was still on the rise looking at this year’s trends, from $390 million in the first quarter of this year to $1.85 billion in the third quarter. Investments from China increased significantly, with the FDI from China amounting $1.53 billion, up 48 percent year-on-year. Investment from Japan declined 27 percent to $1.2 billion, while the U.S. fell 4.0 percent to $2.98 billion.

SIMTOS Newletter July - Monthly SIMTOS

1. About Manufacturing Market in South Korea

According to Gardner Business Media, a survey and statistics agency in US, Korea was the 4th largest machine tool manufacturer in the world with the total production volume of USD 5.6 billion in 2014. The country is the world’s 6th importer and 7th exporter of machine tools as well. Korea’s total consumption was ranked in 5th place but consumption per person was ranked in 2nd place after Switzerland.

Korea has a large economic territory. According to a survey conducted by a Japanese media agency, Korea has eight no. 1 items in the world, ranked in 4th place after US, Europe, and Japan. Those no. 1 items were semiconductors, automobile parts, smartphones, and display devices, proving the country’s competitiveness in the IT, electronics, and automobile industries. In addition, Korea’s manufacturing industry for shipbuilding, motor vehicles, and steel products has been highly acknowledged in the world, which should be backed up by the machine tool industry. Based on the proven competitiveness in automobiles, electronics, and semiconductors, the country is increasing its economic territory and the demand for machine tools. More recently, Korean manufactures look for equipment optimized for their manufacturing processes rather than focus on famous brand names, and overseas makers are trying to seize this opportunity.

2. The HEART of the Smart Factory, 'Automation'

at SIMTOS 2016, KINTEX

- Automation, the media liaised between mankind, machine, and I.T. and SIMTOS
- New arrival "Engineering Software for Manufacturing Zone" in exhibition hall 7&8 SIMTOS2016

In the reference to Korea Government's 'Manufacturing Innovation 3.0 Policy', Korea expect 10,000 smart factories like one of the renowned smart factory of SIEMENS located Amberg, Germany. Hence, there is secured budget of $240 billion, and scheduled to gradual investigation till 2017. If the policy being succeeds, one third of manufacturing factories in Korea would equip IT base production system.
There is no doubt that I.T.(information technology) and necessities for realizing automation such as soft wares, sensor, control and handling technology is key to establish the Smart Factories. In order to notify significance of ‘Automation’, the media liaised with mankind, machine, and I.T., SIMTOS2016 plans to build Smart Factory in KINTEX, Apr. 2015.

Production Automation for Smart Production System

We may consider that the trend of automation in the past as a clue for mass production era. However, recent automation that actively spread among manufacture businesses is not only simple factory automation but also automation of whole production system. So to speak, it would be a factory that liaised between mankind and machine.
Our government spurs 'Manufacturing Innovation 3.0 Policy' to be more competitive in global manufacture environment and to accumulate foundation of a creative economy. As many people acknowledged, creative economy refers to build something out of originals. In this context, cooperation and cooperation of experts, info-communication technology, and fusion techniques lead to qualified and low-cost production, and it has more competitiveness over a creative economy. Korea’s new strategy makes it possible from high quality mass production until customized production. Thus, automated production system is a key to trigger Smart Factory environment.

SIMTOS, the Compilation of Automation and Front Back Manufacturing Process

To take advantages over global market and to appeal demand industries the better quality and technologies, more active advertisement and marketing for automation companies is required. Particularly, companies ought to introduce potential and innovative products for raising their brand image and value. Therefore, renowned public relations meet the necessity.

Exhibitions related automation take great parts for advertisement gradually and there are numerous exhibitions and events in Korea. Nevertheless, ability to figure out the event that performs simultaneous technical cooperation with advertisement and that companies and consumers could blend in is needed. SIMTOS, the largest exhibition fair in Korea that contains compilation of automation and front back manufacture process would be an effective option.

SIMTOS has exhibitors that categorized from planning stages to complete productions such as machine tools, parts, forming machines, welding, laser-cutting, cutting tools and etc. Furthermore, this fair exhibits every automation items: CAD/CAM, CAE, PLM, measuring equipment, solution, sensor, measurement controller, network parts, motors and software; and industrial robots designed for handling and controlling production system throughout specialized hall. In addition, participating companies are in need of automation system.

For these reasons, entry of automation items such as software, measuring equipment, robotics, and etc. remarkably increased since 2012.170 exhibitors of 21 different countries participated at the last show but about 20 companies were not able to attend because of late-apply. Accordingly, SIMTOS 2016 enlarges fairground half as much as 2014 and arranges a themed pavilion of CAD/CAM, Measuring Systems, Automation and Robotics at hall 7 and 8 that was before hall 9.

Engineering Software for Manufacturing Zone in hall 7and 8 at KINTEX 2

In order to dedicate for Smart Factory project, SIMTOS 2016 office creates “Engineering Software for Manufacturing Zone” in hall 7and 8 at KINTEX 2 and recruits automation and software technology items that are core for Smart Factory.
The very first concept, “Engineering Software for Manufacturing Zone l”, created as Station Type which any other Korean exhibitions didn’t try yet. This type of booth designed for specifically efficient software presentation. This fresh and innovative attempt would lead for sure SIMTOS2016 to Festival with Manufacture Engineering and Software.
SIMTOS 2016 will be held during Apr. 13, 2016 ~ Apr. 17, 2016 in KINTEX, Korea. Online application of SIMTOS 2016 is recommended. For further information and details, go to (www.simtos.org,+82-2-3453-2721).
